A Beginner’s Guide to Keeping a Nature Notebook
You do not need drawing skills or scientific knowledge to keep a nature notebook. Its main value is attention: writing down a few details makes you look more closely and gives ordinary walks a memory.
Use a notebook you will actually carry
A small inexpensive notebook is ideal. Expensive paper can make every page feel too important. Add a pencil or waterproof pen and keep both near your walking shoes.
Record the basics
Start each entry with date, place and weather. Then add one thing you saw, one sound, and one question. This structure removes the pressure to write a full diary entry.
Sketch shapes, not artwork
A leaf outline, branch pattern or rough map can be useful even when it is not beautiful. Label the features that caught your attention.
Return to the same pages
Later in the season, add a note beside an earlier observation. The notebook becomes more interesting when it shows change rather than isolated moments.
