A Practical Picnic List for an Unhurried Afternoon
A good picnic should feel easier than eating at home, not like moving a kitchen outdoors. The most reliable approach is to bring fewer foods, choose items that travel well, and pack everything in the order you will use it.
Start with one main thing
Choose sandwiches, a grain salad, a savoury tart or another single centrepiece. Add fruit and one small sweet item rather than six separate snacks.
Pack for the place
A park bench needs less equipment than a field. A light blanket, two cups, napkins, a small knife and a rubbish bag cover most situations. If there is no shade, water and sun protection matter more than extra tableware.
Use sturdy containers
Wide shallow boxes are easier to eat from than deep jars. Keep dressings separate until serving and avoid foods that become unpleasant after an hour without refrigeration.
Leave room for doing nothing
The point of an afternoon outside is not the menu. Once the food is finished, keep the blanket out, read, walk, or simply stay for another half hour.
