Simple Ways to Bring Natural Materials Into the Home

Wood, linen, clay and plants can make a room feel warmer without turning it into a themed interior.

Natural materials work best at home when they are useful first and decorative second. A wooden tray, linen cloth or clay pot earns its place through daily use and adds texture without making the room feel staged.

Start with things you touch

Replace one synthetic-feeling everyday item with wood, cotton, wool, linen or ceramic. A tea towel, bedside basket or chopping board is enough to change the feel of a small area.

Mix finishes

Perfectly matched wood can look flat. Combining pale timber, woven fibres, glazed ceramics and a few darker pieces creates depth while keeping the palette calm.

Use plants where they can thrive

Choose a window first and a plant second. A healthy ordinary plant looks better than a fashionable species struggling in the wrong light.

Leave some empty space

Natural objects still become clutter when there are too many of them. A few useful pieces with room around them usually feel warmer than shelves filled edge to edge.
